YouTube Mashup
I didn’t know who Unk is, and I barely know who Avril Lavigne is, but the (very brief) tributes to the extraordinary Toni Basil in this vid are kinda nice; Unk vs. Avril Lavigne vs. Toni Basil Mash-Up Girlfriend:
This melding of the 1980s with the 21st century is an example of a mashup in video form. DJ Lobsterdust is the artisan who created this work. Some of his other mashup works include Beyonce vs. Tommy Heavenly6 - My Irreplaceable:
and this live, traditional mashup in which the lyrics of one song are sung a cappella over the music to another; Midnight Mashup Show NYC with Adrian & Kenlow:
With Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit as the backing, Adrian and Kenlow (whoever they might be) are singing the words to Michael Jackson’s 1983 hit Billie Jean.
Mashup songs and videos are becoming more and more popular, and are featuring artists of increasingly diverse genres.
Here is a film trailer mashup, another very successful melding of the 1980s with the 21st century, featuring two of my favorite movies, The Goonies and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl; Goonies of the Caribbean:
Some of you, however, may prefer your 80s fix in purer form. This big hair metal mashup is courtesy of cb shaw; Metal Mashup 80’s Hair Band Mega Mix Part 2 by cb shaw:
The bands involved are:
- Kansas
- Carry On Wayward Son
- Def Leppard
- Photograph
- The Knack
- My Sharona
- Black Sabbath ft. Ozzy Osborne
- Iron Man
- Billy Idol
- Mony Mony
- Styx
- Mr. Roboto
- The Cult
- She Sells Sanctuary
Some of you may prefer your Toni Basil in less adulterated form, YouTube has that too; Mickey - Toni Basil (HQ Audio):
Personally, I prefer “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Ricky.
Cheers.

Mashups. Who knew. It’s just remarkable what the kiddies are doing on the interweb these days. When I was a young ‘un my only creative outlet was the etch a sketch.
